Université de Montréal Department of Economics

About our department

The Department of Economics at the University of Montreal offers programs of study in all major areas of economics at the undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. levels. It has established a reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

According to a recent independent study, financed by the European Economics Association, our department ranks second in Canada, first in the world among French language economics departments, and second among non-English language departments.

In another recent study, the Department ranks eighth world-wide in economic theory and 14th in theoretical and applied econometrics. In these two categories, the Department is first in Canada and in the non-English speaking world.

The Department is affiliated with three research centres: CIREQ, CIRANO and CIRRELT. CIREQ (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en économie quantitative) is a centre for research in quantitative economics. CIRANO (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations) is a research centre for the analysis of organisations. CIRRELT (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur les réseaux d'entreprise, la logistique et le transport) is a centre for research on enterprise networks, logistics and transport.

We are located in the Lionel-Groulx building at the west end of the University of Montreal campus, on the blue line of the Montreal Metro, between the Université de Montréal and Côte des Neiges stations.
