The university's campus is located in the center of the island of Montreal, in a green space that runs along the northern slope of Mount Royal. The classrooms and offices of the Department are only a short walk from the former village of Côte des Neiges, founded in 1699 and today a cosmopolitan center of student life.
The Department offers programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral level in all of the principal areas of specialization in economics. Since its foundation in 1953, it has built a reputation for excellence, both in teaching and research.
According to a recent independent study (financed by the European Economic Association), the Economics Department of the Université de Montréal ranks among the first two economics departments in Canada. It is first in the world among French-language departments and second among non-English-language departments.
